A Few Delightful Things – December

This season is all about pairing down; deadlines, social obligations, spaces I’m interacting with, etc. Let’s call it a hibernation! In that spirit, I’m finally integrating my letter, Patreon and my website’s blog!!

Patreon is where I do my long rambles about what I’m working on and the tools I’m using, so if you want an expanded and illustrated read, click here (don’t worry, there’s nothing to sign up for, just a different format!):

Now here’s a few things that I’ve come across this past month that delight me:

Freezing Rain

Last week, our area of the world was graced with freezing rain. It’s a somewhat rare phenomenon where rain becomes supercooled through a process of falling through warm and cool air layers. The effect is that the world becomes coated in a thick glaze of transparent ice, without snowing. Carefully driving down the street as ice falls from powerlines is disconcerting! You can read more about this weather phenomenon here:

New Tools

I just got in and tested a few new tools for my kit. Diamine’s Blue Black Registrar’s Ink is an iron gall ink, therefore waterproof, thin enough for fountain pens and, gets darker as it dries. It is also mildly corrosive in the long term?? The Patreon post has a full test of it, but overall, I’m not in love. It’s an interesting ink though!

More info on Iron Galls, as well as an image of a paper with letter-shaped holes in it here:

I also grabbed a Kakuno Fine fountain pen, and a very weird pencil. The Morning Glory Sketch 1000 is flat. It’s essentially mechanical carpenter’s pencil. I’m having fun putting down both broad and fine strokes though!

Flying Lemurs??

I found out about a bizarre lil creature called a colugo. Lovely big eyes and bodies that look like a chipmunk met a bat?? Here’s a bit of a video for some creature inspiration: YouTube – Colugos at Winsor National Park

Patch Contest!

If you have younglings in your life, Exploration Vessel Nautilus is having their annual patch design contest! We wear the season patches and stickers proudly, so I encourage everyone who is eligible to enter! The above image is of entries before they’re converted to be embroiderable, but the end result is pretty similar. More info here:

I’m going to try to be a bit more active here and on Patreon, as these are spaces I actually care about! I’ve been working on handwriting typeface (still needs a few more special characters and to resolve some spacing issues), as well as researching for an epic map of the Land of Oz, so I hope to have some fun things to share in the future.

Until next time!

I’m a Visual Storyteller and Cartographer. I create graphic novels for creators who don’t quite feel like they belong where they are, but know they must belong somewhere. I give them quietly curious worlds to escape into and explore, inspiring imagination through tales of ancient magic, enemies-to-best friends relationships and pure fun.
