“The staircase from the dormitory led down into the materials room. The extra yarns, tools and maintenance equipment were stored there. The stairs were worn with time, but didn’t creak; the weavery was well taken care of. Turning right, around the stairs, a sturdy door led out to the eating area and beyond that, the kitchen. The door had to fit quite well of course, for the smells of the kitchen would have all of the garments smelling of beef stew before they were treated!”
