We put out a vote as to what content to show for the month of November. The race was close. So close, in fact, that we’ve drawn up a compromise: It’s apparently NaCoMaMo (National Comic Making month? We feel someone must have made that one up!) so we will be pulling another story out of the archives to be presented page by page.
After that, however, there will be 10 days before the December special begins, so that will be filled with random selections from the archives.
Without further adieu, please enjoy these pages, collected under the title plate Bellmage.
The Crystal Bell Forest is an interesting between land. Like the trading post that is also set along the border between Rialan and the mountains of Atur. The people residing there however… well they’re oft forgotten. Most Rialanites are surprised to find that there are communities set among the mountain forests. What is not forgotten, however are the craftsmen of bells. It is not only a long-standing legend, but the people of Atur revere their bellmaking. Their bells are of the highest quality.
The guild system is set up in such a way that space is limited, as you typically live in a dormitory. Therefore the dormitories can be filled with apprentices of a variety of ages since some are put on waiting lists for a few years.
Aturans favor long hair in the everyday circles of fashion. Much like the Rialanites often have short haircuts, it’s not manditory. Just in fashion.
We at the trading post are experimenting with different art forms in these pages. A few more pages should get us into the groove.
Of course this bell is special, but maps are sculpted into many different artifacts. There are terrestrial maps, astral maps… Legend has it that Sky Captain Imolianus, the far-seeing, uses star maps to navigate to mystical places. We will search the archives for corroboration of such tales.
There must be some psychological connection to living in the mountains and building developments on high, precarious places, because many of the inhabitants have a love of climbing and gymnastic feats.
Bellmap (n) /bel/map/ – 1. A pictorial wayfinding device carved into a chiming object 2. A chiming object shaped like a pictorial wayfinding device 3. A legendary object capable of making visible the path to a certain destination. The activation of aforementioned power depends on the specific bell 4. The carrier of the power to make paths to certain destinations visible. Carrier may imply the holding of the bell or actual supernatural workings.
There are a variety of teas crafted in Aturan culture, but the finest of teas are cultivated in it’s neighboring region Mierat.
Some things are prevalent in cultures world wide: Hyper-doting parents. Our heroine was able to get into the Bellcraft Guild around college age so this is similar to flunking out and shamefully returning home. In this case her parents seem perfectly overjoyed to have her. Too overjoyed perhaps.
The Aturan countryside is a far departure from the hot, dry rocks of Rialan. Atur basically comprises the crest along the mountain range, but for every mountain there is a valley! Travel through Atur was slow until airships evolved from dangerous dirigibles to more stable models that closer resemble their seafaring cousins.
